The Truth shall set you free

Feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, defeated? Taste and see that the LORD is good...let his truth set you free...perhaps you have forgotten, perhaps never even gotten it...God does not want you in the dark, God does not expect you to blindly surrender to HIM whom you do not know but to HIM you can know more and more each day...ignorance will cause you to doubt, it will cause you to question without hope...it will cost you everything. To those who believe God has given the privilege of being in an ever growing relationship with HIM through the perfect sacrifice of Christ Jesus our Lord...if you do not know this Truth...hold tight for the Bible says "If you hear the voice of God, do not harden your hearts...today is the day of Salvation" and as we delve into the loving arms of our God, we know that to those who are being saved, this is a message of hope...a sweet aroma unto their souls and to those who are already saved it is a reminder that we are called to be holy for He is holy...we are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling...therefore we, your sisters, are here to encourage you with a biblical reminder of God's plans for our lives.

Hebrews 10:32-39  Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecu tion; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not delay. 38But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back,  I will not be pleased with him."39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

The fact that the writer of Hebrews begins to encourage them by using the word remember indicates that they already knew what he was talking about. In order to encourage them he is bringing them back in rememberance and setting the ground for the exhortation...He takes them back to when they first believed and passed from darkness into light, from confusion into clariy...remember that day, that time, that season? He specifically tells them...remember your stood your ground on this new found truth about Jesus Christ, you've done this before...even though it might have cost you embarrasment, ridicule, rejection, misunderstanding, loss of all types ..you did it because you were looking to JESUS as the solution, the hope of all your longings....are things different now? are you overw helmed, exhausted, defeated? well, what is the difference? could it be that you have you forgotten your first love? Could it be that you are suffering from lack of knowledge? Do you know that God expects you to grow into maturity? the Bible calls this process sanctification. Being born again is a supernatural occurence, it is the beginning of a new life. If you are underinformed about what the LORD expects of you upon salvation, you will always remain an easy target for discouragement. Though Pastors and teachers are a gift from God for the building up of the Body, it is never their responsibility to ensure our response. After redemption and being completely forgiven of all of our past sins, God will hold everyone of us accountable as to how we led our new life. If, indeed, we are his children, the Bible says that we will no longer be able to just live in sin without feeling convicted. We will continue to fall into sin but we will not justify the pratice of sin in our lives...we will also realize that God is expecting us to grow into maturity so that little by little we will be more dependent in HIM.

Ephesians 4:11-24 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. 17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. 20You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness

Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrest ling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

So, we can see that we are expected to grow into maturity to avoid being tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and carftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. God warned his people clearly through the Prophet Hosea in chapter 4:6

6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
       "Because you have rejected knowledge,
       I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
So, in oder of importance let's make sure that we understand that we have been saved by grace and not by works but it is through our works, deeds, attitudes that we will be assured that we are indeed new creatures in Christ Jesus...changed by his glory into a new people, a royal priesthood, separated for his glory...predestined to do good works...

so how do we workout our salvation and grow into mature women lacking nothing able to persevere in the midst of trials and tribulation?...how do we avoid being emotion driven, self demanding, stubborn and independent in our ways?

1 Thessalonians 4:2-7 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.3It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Consider who you follow?
Hebrews 2:10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
God is conforming you to the image of His perfect Son Christ Jesus and you too will have to be perfected through suffering, so suffering can be a wonderful tool in God's hand if you can view it from God's perspective. Jesus has promised that we will never have to face anything for which HE hasn't already equipped us to endure...will we believe HIM?

Consider who you are?
Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Consider how God has comforted you all along and why?
2 Cor 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God
These trials are so that God has something to confrot you through and once He has done so He expects you to now be his arms to someone else...his shoulder for them to cry on...

Consider what will happen when Christ is revealed to the entire world?
Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Consider your future now called eternal life because of HIM?
1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house=2 0are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going."

This is the perfect example of how the more you know, the more secure you will be...Jesus encourages his disciples not to be troubled right after He has taught them about Judas' betrayal and Peter's denial...Knowing that they would let HIM down, HE told them...have I been with you for so long and still you don't know me. We have the Bible...the accounts of some of the men who walked with JESUS on earth...then we have recorded history from the Church Fathers, to what God did 500 years ago through the Reformation to what will happen till the end. so ignorance is our choice and no one else's responsibility.

Consider that God is never injust

2 Cor 1:8-9 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. 9Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

Conclusion
In the eyes of the world, the worldview says "I am not going to put up with it" but God says through WORD, grow up into the fulness of Christ...be renewed in your mind by the washing of the Word...be heavenly minded not worldly in the ways you used to walk. Be diligent in seeking me through what I have already left recorded for you and know that all undergo trials, you invest where moth and rust can not touch you...trust me ; submit and endure"

Father, I want to bring glory to your Name

John 12:27-36   27"Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. 30Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." 33He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. 34The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" 35Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

What did Jesus mean by saying “glorify your name”?

The plan of redemption of the world included the physical death of Jesus on the cross.  In order that the Father would be glorified, plans had to remain as designed from the foundation of the world.  Jesus’ desire to obey His Father led HIM even to the point of death on a cross.  In this, HE paved the way for us to continue his work on earth until the day of his return. When we were in enmity with the Father, we could not bring glorify to his Name & yet now that we are redeemed, it is our high calling that through our obedience & sacrifice we would bring glory to His Name by submitting in all of our ways to HIM who alone is worthy.

Colossians 1:21-23  21Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.

In Isaiah 53 we read the prophecy given to Isaiah approximately 700 BC which is a detailed description of the plan of redemption through the rejection & killing of Jesus our Redeemer.

3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities
       and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
       smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
       he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
       each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
       the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
       yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
       For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul,
       he will see the light of life and be satisfied ;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

So how can we now fulfill our calling to bring glory to the Father which is in heaven? Only by obeying Jesus who is the visible image of the invisible God.

Colossians 1:15-20  15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Examples of obedience

John 10:17-18  17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

Hebrews 5:7-9 7During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him

2 John 1:6  And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

You may say as did Philip…Jesus I am not sure I understand what exactly do you mean…just show me what to do & I will do it.  The Lord corrects & confront him by saying “I am in the Father and the Father is in me, now I will be in YOU therefore do what the Father told me to do…bring glory to His Name through obedience to the Son by the power of His Holy Spirit.

John 14:8-17  8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

Following is a practical example of how we can bring glory to the Father by obeying Jesus’ teachings through the power of his Spirit.

Luke 6:27-36   27"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.  32"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. 33And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. 34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. 35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Conclusion

When we act in natural ways then we are just going to satisfy & bring glory to ourselves. If we have the Spirit of God living the life of the Son in us then we are to do as Jesus did & bring glory to Our Father’s Name.

A warning for the day

Jude 1  1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,  To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ: 2Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. 3Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 4For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. 5Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.  8In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. 9But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" 10Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that destroy them. 11Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion. 12These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. 13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. 14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him." 16These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage. 17But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18They said to you, "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires." 19These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. 20But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. 22Be merciful to those who doubt; 23snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. 24To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Trusting God even when

John 11:1-25

1Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary & her sister Martha. 2This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord & wiped his feet with her hair. 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." 4When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." 5Jesus loved Martha & her sister & Lazarus. 6Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.

**What a disappointment? Jesus didn’t move at the request of his loved ones…why? Was he selfish, indifferent, too busy? No, God’s love is just very different than ours…humans are very emotion driven.  God’s love is a responsible, well thought out love, full of purpose & with eternity in mind. His love wants the best for us even if it hurts him to withhold what we are requesting.

2 Thessalonians 3:1-15

1Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. 3But the Lord is faithful, & he will strengthen & protect you from the evil one. 4We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing & will continue to do the things we command. 5May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love & Christ's perseverance. 6In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle & does not live according to the teaching you received from us. 7For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring & toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." 11We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12Such people we command & urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down & earn the bread they eat. 13& as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. 14If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. 15Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

John 11:7  7Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." 8"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"

**The audacity of correcting &/or alert the Lord as if we might understand things better than HE does. It is imperative that we live with the urgency of the reality of the finality of our choices on earth.  Jesus did not allow past experiences to determine future ones.  After all He was following the lead of His Father who knew it all.

Isaiah 43:18-1918 "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

John 11:9   9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. 10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light."

1 John 1:5-10 5This is the message we have heard from him & declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie & do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, & the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

**Nothing like walking in the light…being honest, open, vulnerable & direct with the Lord, yourself & others.  There is truly no need to be suspended in time if you learn to walk in the light, the naked truth of the Word of God.

John 11:11-16  11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." 12His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." 16Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

**Wow, what happened to Thomas.  Funny, sometimes we are full of doubts & others full of impulsiveness.  We have a huge need to put our feeling/emotions under God’s authority?  Maturity is the goal & that comes with a true balance between the Truth we know handles by the Spirit who should control us.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments & every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, & we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

John 11:17-19

17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

**How disappointing right? The sisters sent word to Jesus right away…Lazarus was just sick. Jesus takes 2 days & now the situation is so much worse.  Remember the last time you cried out to the Lord, you have now even learned not to go to the phone first…so, you address HIM right away & still He doesn’t show up for 4 days. Growing with Christ is an ever lasting process.  Just because we have learned one important aspect of dealing with the Lord does not exempt us from continued testing & growing.

John 11:20-25

20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. 21"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."

Conclusion

**This is where we need to be.  We need to learn to trust in God in such a way that even if things look bleak, we know that God has an answer.  Without trials perseverance is not even an option.  Patience & perseverance are totally different.  Patience just endures in the midst of a situation, perseverance fights against breaking our trust that God is going to come through.  We are called to be patient with one another but persevere that we may be mature in our character, lacking nothing.

Romans 5:1-5

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Caught between the religious authority & the secular attack of our age

John 10:31-42

31Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" 33"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." 34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? 35If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came (Prophets/Kings) —and the Scripture cannot be broken— 36what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? 37Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. 38But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father." 39Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. 40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed 41and many people came to him. They said, "Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true." 42And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Jesus arrives on earth at God’s perfect timing & as we study His Word, we can easily see that He is constantly faced with the challenges of his days.  Unlike us, HE is not threatened by religious authority or human understanding. He alone stands safe but it is imperative that we don’t end up considered among those who perished for lack of knowledge.  King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, made mention in his record of Ecclesiastes that there was nothing new under the sun, therefore, let’s analyze what Satan is up to as he continues his plan to take millions of people with him to eternal damnation.  His attacks range from keeping people in the dark about his existence to challenging the believer as to the authenticity of the Bible.  We live in times where ignorance is not going to qualify as a protective agent.

According to Romans 1:18-20

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

By Jesus experience & constant warnings our greatest danger will come from within the church through those deemed worthy of our trust. It is important to note that the Word of God has been attacked since the beginning of its accessibility.  Where does the church stand today?  Most of us are recent members of the Body of Christ & it is imperative that we study His Holy Word & are aware of the current form of attack on it. We are currently suffering the effects of Postmodernism. In order to understand the repercussions of our time in human history, we need to look back & see how we landed where we stand right now.

Pre-modernism led to modernism & finally postmodernism.  From a biblical standpoint we will look at the dangers of succumbing to the era as opposed to standing by God’s revealed truth.

Facts about Pre-modernism

  • Often referred to as the pre-critical period, a time before the criteria of truth became so strict.
  • Life in the pre-modern period was dominated by a belief in the supernatural realm, by a belief in God or gods, and His or their activity in human & cosmic affairs.
  • One of the most interesting features about the pre-modern period is the way in which people decided if the stories that were shared among them were true or false. The primary means of evaluation of truth for many centuries  were as follows:
  • Correspondence method of truth - If the story being told corresponds to the observable phenomenon in the world, then the story is accepted as truth.
  • Coherence method of truth - The coherence theory would add to the correspondence theory the idea that all of the individual stories told over a period of time should not contradict one another.
  • The printing press had not been invented & the truth or falsity of these gods was largely communicated through oral tradition & hand-written texts which were extremely rare & precious. Typically, these stories contained important matters of faith & history that provided a structure, or world view, to help the people make sense of their world. These tales also included instructions or moral codes concerning the behavior that was expected for the community to live in peace.
  • The major thing one should remember is that, with the arrival of new scientific discoveries, the Western world was changing forever, & this would have far reaching impact on every aspect of life, especially religion.
  • This ear ends somewhere between the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century & the high part of the Renaissance in the sixteenth century.

Modernism

  • Some state that it dates back to the beginning of the French Revolution (1789 to 1799)
  • Others state that it dates back to the Age of Enlightenment (1700-1800).
  • A main theory of modernism is that human reason, armed with the scientific method, is the only reliable means of attaining knowledge about the universe
  • In the eighteenth century the progress of science accelerated so rapidly that it appeared as if science would soon be able to explain everything. Many believed that there were no limits to the power of human reason operating with the data from sense perception. In contrast to the truth of the oral tradition in the pre-modern era, the modern period accepted as truth only that which could be proven to be true.

Charles Darwin is a product of modernism and one of the greatest challenges of post-modernism.  He lived from 18091882 and is famous for proposing the theory of evolution by means of natural selection.

Postmodernism

·        Some date its beginning as early as 1941 & as late as 1966.

·        One of the central beliefs of the era is that there is no such thing as objective truth. In fact, the new trend of thought is to embrace, affirm & live with philosophical, theological, & even scientific chaos.

·        This theory appeals more to a person's feelings than to his or her sense of factual truth.

The progression of humanity’s constant pride continues to attempt to disintegrate God’s truth for future generations.  From pre-modernism to post-modernism the attack is the same.  Satan’s goal is to have humans exult themselves by means of trying to explain God. Let’s look at the facts.

  • The modern period was different than the pre-modern in its rejection of the supernatural or the awe-inspiring which is based largely on the belief that religious truth claims are different than scientific truth claims. According to many, truth itself had changed.
  • The effort of the Enlightenment rationalists to combine the new scientific method with the pre-modern religious beliefs soon resulted in a suspicion about the oral & written truth claims of the Christian religion.
  • It is easy to see how doctrines such as the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, & the resurrection could not be proved using scientific methods because there is no way to repeat such historical events in a laboratory environment, and, therefore, the credibility of such events began to become suspicious.
  • The so-called-truths of religion were quickly being cast aside in favor of the new & better truths found by science. Add to this scientific commotion, the advancement of Darwinian naturalism (mid to late 1800) & it is easy to see how religious claims seemed like charming, antiquated beliefs for many people.
  • The major driving theory behind the advance of modernism was the belief that reality was objective & that all men could discover the principles of nature & unlock her secrets.
  • The modern period culminated in arrogance concerning human abilities & human reason. It proposed a world created without any assistance from God.
  • The effect of postmodern theories on Christian truth claims is that the creation accounts found in Genesis & the stories about Christ in the gospels have been reduced to one cultural group's account of reality.
  • Many postmodernists argue that Christians are free to believe that Christ is God if they like but their claims can not be exclusive of other people's beliefs.
  • Truth may be true for one person & false for another. "That may be true for you, but it is not true for me." This is an implicit denial of a common reality.
  • Furthermore, Christians are expected to tolerate contradicting truth claims & to look the other way if certain ethical behaviors (abortion, homosexuality, same sex marriage, etc.) do not suit their tastes.
  • The current postmodern condition is only in the early stages of development, not even a half a century old, & yet its devastating effects have penetrated every aspect of our lives.
  • Christians largely responded too late to the threats of Darwinism, & now the destructive effects of that movement are evident to anyone in the Christian community.
  • Postmodernism & its companion rampant philosophical relativism, should be among the foremost concerns of any Christian who wishes to engage his or her culture & ensure that the gospel of Christ has a fertile context in which it can take root & grow in the future.
  • The result, even today, is that persons professing to be Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, or even atheists are given equal degrees of credibility. Truth has become a function of personal preference, not correspondence to objective reality.
  • When we attempt to speak to people on any controversial issue, whether it is political, ethical, or religious, we invariably are confronted with different approaches to truth. Some people accept divine revelation, some accept science, & others accept no final authority. We have moved from a fact-based criteria to a feeling-based criteria for truth.
  • Finally the collapse of confidence in reason is the disappearance of truth. Truth is now reduced to taste.  Post-modernity denies that there is such a thing as truth, or denies that we can access truth. Instead of knowing truth we express opinions, or we indicate preferences, or we "go with our gut." Truth? What is truth, anyway? And if it existed, what makes us think we could know it? And even if we could know it, how would we know when we had found it? Truth? You have your opinion and I have mine. Who or what is the arbiter between you and me?

Many well respected preachers of the Gospel today have caved in to the pressures of our day & you may hear something like this come straight out of their mouth…”While the Word of God is absolute, we are not perfect, therefore, we have no way of truly defining what Scripture really says.”  The danger of this is the attempt to devoid authority from the divine Word of God.  This explains the birth & growth of homosexuality’s acceptance in the church.

While we read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11  9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God

Loving like Jesus loved means sticking to the Truth through the pain of being misunderstood.  While we are not called to judge the people of the world, we are certainly called to be a light to them, a leading force toward the Light of the World.  And yet we are called to confront those calling themselves Christians, specially leaders to the understand set forth in the Word.

1 Corinthians 5:9-13  9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. 12What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."

So what do we do? Do we cave in to the pressure of our post-modern world?

There are many warnings against adding or removing anything from God’s Word.

Deuteronomy 4:1-2  1 “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Deuteronomy 12:32  32 See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

Proverbs 30:6  6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Jeremiah 26:2  2 "This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard of the LORD's house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the LORD. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word.

Revelation 22:18-19  18I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

In the midst of all of our painful circumstances, when we know that our loved ones are headed for disaster, we need to stand by what we know God has already proclaimed.  It is in these very difficult situations that God will provide us with the opportunities of sharing the Good News of Christ.  Jesus said that only the sick realize their need for HIM so misleading someone by making allowance for their sin is truly the most unloving thing we can do.  If we are Christ’s Ambassadors in the lives of those around us, how are we doing? Can they see that they are living in darkness by the light you represent?

Does the unbeliever in your life see any need to believe? We have been saved with a purpose in mind…we are continuing on with the work of Christ on earth.

In John 17:13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

If we do not accept the responsibility of leading people to Christ, then striving to live godly lives is really not even an option for us.  Yet we serve a Master who says that those who claim to see will be held accountable by their own admittance.

John 9:39-41 39Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." 40Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?" 41Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

Stand your ground & let your fear be the fear that leads you closer to the heart of God.  All else is in his hands.

Paul’s warns us in 2 Timothy 1:7-10

7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 8So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Psalm 138:2

2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
       and will praise your name
for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
       your name and your word.

Psalm 89:7

 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
he is more awesome than all who surround him.

We serve a God who is Sovereign and fully in control, let’s not try to come up with explanations to satiate the needs of others for extra ways to come to the One and Only God.  Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one comes to the Father except through HIM.

The Spirit of Religion

Luke 12:1-3 Meanwhile, the crowds grew until thousands were milling about and crusing each other.  Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them, "Beware of the yeast of the Parisees--beware of their hypocrisy. 2 The time is coming when everything will be revealed; all that is secret will be made public. 3 Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!

If you have grown up in a home where God was introduced to you as a religious figure it is very possible that you could be caught in a wrong attitude toward HIM.  It is only the person who has experienced the second birth who can truly begin to understand that God is so intricately beautiful and so very far away from what religion makes HIM out to be.

It is no wonder that when Jesus walked on earth He frequently corrected this very attitude.  The religious attitude is one who is evident and focused solely on outer change.  The Pharisees of today are those who adhere to a set of rules and measure those around them according to how they are mastering their preferred set of rules.

Jesus' warning to us today is "I hated it then and I hate it now".  Do not trample the blood of the Savior by trying to narrow Salvation, Sanctification, Ordination and any other nation to your own set of comfortable rules.  Jesus is the Judge and all of us will have to sit before HIM to give an account of what we have said and done during our lifetime.  If He is willing to receive us, hear us and forgive us then why not shoot for being completely honest with HIM.  Don't be so concerned about the frailties of those around you but lead by example in your transparency and change.

The testing of you faith

Do you realize that the testing of your faith is such a loving sign of your Dad's presence in your life?  Blessed are you who though do not see believe.  Our Heavenly Father is delighted as we grow in our faith in HIM.  Our faith is nothing but our trust in who HE is.  It is important to be tested in this area of our life for we know not when we might have wrongly placed our faith.  We as humans tend to place our faith more easily on:

      people
      money
      position
      tradition
      education
      experiences
      leaders

It takes a test to reveal the truth of what or who we are leaning on.  If our Father did not love us so, HE would continue to leave us leaning on the wrong thing until we would hit the floor and then realize it.

I am thankful from the bottom of my heart for the daily presence of my Savior who tests me with the goal of guiding me.  Always faithful to show HIMSELF real in my daily life.  How are you looking at your trials?  Are they a constant:
  • set back
  • detour
  • delay
  • thrust
It is up to you.  God is the Author and Perfecter of your faith (Heb 12).  You are to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.  He is the iniator, you are the responder.  God has begun a good work in you and has every intention of finishing the job.  Whether you participate or fight will determine the quality of your life and service toward the King.

You can either be a champion or a complainer...I encourage you be strong and courageous for when we have shared in the sufferings of our King, we will share also in his glory.

To HIM alone who is worthy,
Gabie

The Cost of faithfulness

It cost Jesus His life and it will cost you yours (Hebrews 12).
Jesus speaks repeatdely about the cost of
following HIM; submitting to His lordship.
He explained to us that losing our life would be the
only way of truly gaining everlasting life.

What price are you willing to pay to abide in Christ (John 15)?

He lives in total Light and there is absolutely no darkness in HIM at all (1 John).  Therefore, if we are to live in Christ (Colossians 3), we must remain in the Light as HE is in the Light.  Living in the Light requires courage.  It requires humility because living in the light means to live in total transparency, with HIM and others.  We know from Ecclessiastes that there is nothing hidden under the sun.  God has made it clear that He sees and knows all things.  God is never at a risk of being misled, confused nor mocked by anyone.  God knows that it is in the truth that we will be set free (John 8). He is not referring solely to the Truth of His Word, He is referring to the truth of who we are and where we are up against his Truth.

If we choose to open up to HIM, HE is faithful (1 John 1:9) to walk us through the painful memories and as HE was with Meshack, Shadrack and Abednego in the fire (Daniel), so will HE be with us (Hebrews 13).  We are not meant to be stagnant in any area of our lives.  Being an unfruitful servant will carry high consequences (Matt. 25).  So I exhort you to be strong and courageous (Joshua 1), for if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8)

Are you willing to pay the price of being faithful to the Person of Jesus Christ?

Then you must be willing to seek HIM daily and find confirmation through His Written Word, peace and the love of His faithful servants.

For His glory,
Gabie

                                             Misplaced loyalty

Romans 8:28

"We know that all things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to his purposes"

One of the most misunderstood or misused Scripture verses is the first thing that might come flying out from our lips when we see someone suffering.

What exactly do we mean by this?

Are we aware that what God considers good and what we consider good usually are completely at odds?

When was the last time you used this to comfort someone and did you use it in a biblical way?

God had plans for planet earth even before the world begun.  We know that even before the foundations of the world, God made provision for our redepmtion through the slaying of the Lamb.  He has purpose in everything HE does and only those who truly love HIM and are willing to understand that His purposes are foreign to ours, can rest at peace with this Scripture.

Beware of misplacing your loyalties by allowing your emotions to reign in your advice to others.  God will stop at nothing to accomplish His will.  If He allowed His Son to go to the cross for the redemption of the world, what won't He allow in your life to get you home safely?  Don't interfere in what God is doing in the lives of those around you by misplacing your loyalty in a moment of distress.

Perseverance-daily obedience

In order that we may perservere, we must put into practice our dependence on God.  If we don't pursue HIM daily, there is no way we will be able to press through the difficult times of our lives.  God has forwarned us that we will have tribulation in this world so why wait until we are in a tough position to start trying to trust in God.

Many were the years that I waited until the very last minute of any situation to cry out to God, now I know that it was so disrespectful to expect God to just run at my very request.  I am in awe of a God who poured out his mercy and grace upon the life of someone who took HIM for granted over and over again.  When I look back at the many unrecognized suicide attempts, I am just fascinated by the love of a God who overuled my destructive behavior out of mercy.

Are you sad? Confused? desolutioned? run...run quickly to the God who awaits your return with open arms.  If He gave His Son for you while you were still a sinner, how much more will HE not do for you now that you are righteous in Christ?
In Christ alone,

Thanksgiving

I wake up today astonished that an entire year has passed so very quickly.  I remember Thanksgiving last year.  I remember feeling very much like I am feeling right now.  Grateful for what Jesus had done during the year and fighting to cross the finish line with the same enthusiasm with which I started.

As I sat with a friend looking back at the last few months, we were reminded how challenging the last few weeks of the year had been.  God is not only about starting strong but more so about finishing strong.  We are but weeks from closing out this amazing year, so I encourage you to keep your eyes on the prize.  Jesus who is the Author and Perfecter of our faith endured the cross by keeping his eyes on the joy set before HIM. His joy was to finish the work His Father gave HIM to do here on earth and as the cross was approaching so was the end of his race.

We know Jesus will come as a thieve in the night but his children should not be caught by surprise becuase we have already been forwarned of how it will take place.  No, we don't know exactly when but it could be at any moment.  Therefore, be thankful in everything and be ready to see your Savior arrive just as HE left.

in love with Jesus,

The cost of compromise vs. the blessing of standing in faith

Daniel 1:8-10
8-10 But Daniel determined that he would not defile himself by eating the king's food or drinking his wine, so he asked the head of the palace staff to exempt him from the royal diet. The head of the palace staff, by God's grace, liked Daniel, but he warned him, "I'm afraid of what my master the king will do. He is the one who assigned this diet and if he sees that you are not as healthy as the rest, he'll have my head!"

Compromise...

Daniel was a true man of God.  He was determined to follow the will of His God knowing well of the favor that lies within his grace.  Though he had been taken out of his environment and was now captive to the orders of his earthly master, he was decided to obey His Heavenly Master.  Notice how he does not cave in to the demands of the King of Babylon.  In all wisdom, he steps out in faith and confidently asks the palace staff to exempt him from the king's request.

Where did this confidence come from?
It came from the confidence that he had in the Lord.
He was sure of God's ways.

It takes true determination to obey the ways of the Lord.  He grants grace and strength to anyone willing to put their trust in HIM.  Romans 12 speaks of the renovation of our mind through the washing of the Word. People expect a transplant to occur and are not committed to constant obedience of the Word of God.

As we dig our heals into the love of Christ expressed so beautifully in His Word, we have faith that our minds are being renewed on a daily basis.  God's ways are not our ways.  He is not a captive of time as are we.  He can accomplish infinitally so much more than we could ever ask or imagine.  Be decided not to compromise.  Remember it takes time and trust to start seeing the unseen over the seen.  If Daniel did not have a heavenly, eternal perspective he would have just caved in as so many Christians do today.

Are you caving in to the pressures of the world? are you justifying your compromise?

The standard is Holiness and it is for all believers!!!

God has called all believers to be holy 1 Corinthians 1:2Ephesians 1:4.  Holiness is the essence of Our God.  He is Perfect and Holy and is calling his Body to be as He is.

Will you do everything you can to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit and trust what is written in the Living Word of God or will you cave in to the reasoning of the many voices of the world?

constant allure of the TV
The demands of Hollywood
The reasoning of human Psychology
The expectation of the culture
The need of common sense

Christianity is not a religion no matter how many people would like to categorize as such.  Christianity is a personal relationship and a close following of the Person of Jesus Christ. Though there are many black and white issues addressed in the Bible that pertain to every believer, there are also many gray areas where personal conviction comes into play. True conviction can only come from His Holy Spirit.  God is the only One that knows the weakness of every person.  He knows what is compromise for you. He is the One that points to all Truth and helps you realize that your reasoning is going to lead you to compromise.

What is the cost of compromising the Word and Ways of Christ?

2 Timothy 2:20-21 (NIV)
In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay.  The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. 21 If you keep yourself pure (personal reponsibility), you will be a utensil God can use for his purpose.  Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.

Everyone has the same amount of possibilities...God does not have favorites, He just has a plan to complete.  If we compromise and cave in to what the world or carnal Christians say around us, we are the only ones to blame.
